Thazh – Because She Deserves the Purest

By: Roshna Sri, Prathiyuksaa, Ashwin, Anuvarshini, Mohammed Naasih, Nilay Das, Surubika

πŸ’‘ Core Idea

Thazh is a biodegradable sanitary pad made from banana fiber, designed to address two pressing challenges:

  • Menstrual hygiene access for all
  • Environmental damage caused by plastic-based sanitary products

It’s a 100% natural, affordable, and compostable sanitary pad that supports women’s health and the planet.

πŸ€” Why We Chose Thazh

1. A Need That’s Personal and Universal

  • Lack of access to affordable and safe sanitary products
  • Social taboos that make menstruation a silent struggle
  • Health issues caused by plastic-based commercial pads

2. Environmental Responsibility

  • Most commercial pads contain 90% plastic and take 500–800 years to decompose
  • India discards over 12 billion pads annually
  • We use banana stem waste, turning it into a solution

3. Business Model

  • Uses locally available materials
  • Employs women in rural areas
  • Low production cost, easy community-scale sale

🧡 Materials Used

  • Banana Fiber: Core absorbent layer
  • Boiling Water: Used to soften fibers
  • Baking Soda: Mild alkali to break fibers
  • Vinegar: Neutralizes alkalinity post-boiling
  • Cotton Cloth: Soft top layer
  • Non-Woven Fabric: For base layer support
  • Double-Sided Tape: To stick layers together without stitching
  • Recyclable Paper: For packaging

πŸ”¬ Our Process

  1. Extract: Banana fibers were collected from discarded stems
  2. Boil: Cut and boiled in water + baking soda for 1 hour
  3. Neutralize: Soaked in vinegar water to remove excess alkalinity
  4. Dry: Sun-dried until completely moisture-free
  5. Pulp: Beaten into fluffy absorbent pulp
  6. Layer: Sandwiched between cotton and non-woven sheet
  7. Bind: Layers were stuck using double-sided tape to keep the product eco-friendly and glue-free
  8. Pack: Folded and wrapped in eco-friendly paper cover
